I've just put my name down for a 10k race for charity. It's an ambitious goal for me as I've always felt I wasn't cutout for running - I remember the pain and humiliation of cross country running at school. Anyway, I'm over that and have decided to go for it but it's got me thinking about goals in general.
The achievement of a goal is quite a high - and I'm sure I'll be on cloud nine if (when) I complete the race. And a well set goal can pull you towards it like a magnet, but it's very important that the achievement of a goal isn't the only benefit. The journey is just as important, if not more so.
I want to feel fit and alive and I want to enjoy the exhilarating feeling of my body moving while I'm running and that getting into the 'zone' where your external body is a whirlwind of motion, yet your internal mind is as still as if you're sitting in an armchair at home. It's a feeling I discovered long after the awful PE at school experience, which could very possibly have put me off exercise for life. I'm glad it didn't as being in the zone is one of those peak feelings that make living such a joy - and it overflows into the rest of your life.
Anyway, the point I originally meant to make is that if you're doing The Food Philosophy course and you set the goals as advised in the first week, don't forget to get what you can out of the journey towards them. The little steps taken and the changes that can happen to you can be just as exhilarating as any high you can get. The sense of freedom is enormous. Don't forget to appreciate that and live your life in the now rather than when you've reached a set goal. Take it as it comes and enjoy each day on the path to your liberation from overeating and all of its nasty side effects.
The same advice can be given about life in general. It's a dance or a piece of music. You don't just fast forward through it to get to the end, you savour it and appreciate every note as you hear it.
Don't rush to the end of the song. Listen carefully to every note and every silence in between the notes. Notice everything.
